Anarchist Theory in Contemporary International Relations: A Critical Analysis

Şaban Halis Çalış , Çağlar Söker

Abstract

Anarchism has not been introduced or studied as an independent theory in the discipline of International Relations (IR) for a long time. The initial studies related to anarchism were published in the 1970s; however, they are of an exceptional nature. It was not until the 2000s that a disciplinary awareness of the neglect of anarchism emerged, along with a revival in the literature on anarchist theory. This article aims to shed light on the recently developing literature of anarchist theory within the discipline and seeks to critically approach the existing literature by questioning its deficiencies and problems. Several conclusions have been reached in the article. Firstly, it is argued that the superficial, deficient and misleading portrails of anarchism in IR could create pedagogical problems and potentially affect different studies on this theory in negative ways. Secondly, it is emphasized that the dominance of certain versions of anarchism or the degrading attitude towards different anarchist approaches could undermine the pluralistic character of anarchism, as well hinder the potential contributions to the analysis of international relations. The third main conclusion is that despite the relative expansion in the literature, there is still much work to be done. From addressing the classics to anarchist analysis of the discipline’s fundamental concepts; from anarchism’s approach to global problems to anarchist perspectives on the history of global relations, there are numerous areas where gaps exist. The article aims to draw attention to these areas and ultimately to encourage the revival of anarchist theory in Turkish literature as well.
